Well, it sucks when the weather guys get it right when they say it’s going to be a rainy day. But that didn’t stop me from heading out this morning for a short walk and catching Providence & Worcester train NR-2 up around Mill Cove in Ledyard, CT.
I got up to Erickson Park around my normal time, just as NR-2 was reporting they were at MP12 and about 15 minutes out of the Sub Base. That gave me enough time to walk around a bit dodging raindrops and get into position to catch NR-2 running south amongst the precipitation and fog.
As I headed for my spot towards the south end of Mill Cove, the rain of course started to pick up in intensity. Oh, well, what’s a little water? I figured I’d shoot in black & white mode today, trying to preserve the gloomy, wet feeling of the day.
As the raindrops kept falling, here came NR-2 past Red Top just to the north of me.

And I grabbed a few of my “standard” Mill Cove shots, but this time with a fog hanging in the background, and water falling in the fore.

But one shot caught my eye – a pair of ducks just sitting in the water. I barely fit them and the train in the same frame, but I think it works, even though it completely ignores the “rule of thirds.” Bah, what good are rules if you can’t break them? 🙂

As the train cleared the cove, I got back into the car, dried off the camera first, then my head, and made my way back to the office. NR-2 was headed for Midway with a string of hoppers for Tilcon. Wish I could have headed down there, but time was getting tight.
Thanks for looking!
