I had to head into work early this morning for a 7am teleconference. Once that was done, I decided to take advantage of the hole in my schedule to try and find a little breakfast, as well as Providence & Worcester train NR-2. As luck had it, I found both.
Once my teleconference was over, I headed out to the car to try to catch NR-2 somewhere. Not knowing when they left Plainfield, or hit the Jewett City detector made me a little leery about catching them, but I figured what the hell. So I had the scanner on as I headed north to try to intercept the train. I figured breakfast could wait a bit – it would be just my luck to have NR-2 pull onto the scene as I was waiting for my food.
On my way north past the Sub Base, the scanner was silent. Hmmm, where were they? Instead of pulling down to Mill Cove, I decided to head north to see how far I could get, and if I could get them somewhere else.
By the time I got past Dow Chemical in Ledyard, NR-2 came over the radio, reporting to the Worcester dispatcher that they were south of MP11 and about 15 minutes from the base. Well, now I knew where they were! So a quick U-turn, and I was heading south again. I guess it’ll be the old standby of Mill Cove again (yeah, I know, I’ve got to get to some new spots…I’ll work on that this year, I promise!).
So I get down to the cove well ahead of the train and wait a bit. After about 10 minutes, I head down to the south end of the cove and get out of the car just as the train reports that they were south of MP5. Not long after that they were sounding for Red Top and pulling onto the causeway.
[cpg_imagefixthumb:8436]While they were continuing south, a pair of seagulls just sat there on the ice.
[cpg_imagefixthumb:8435]And now in full view was their train – two 6-truck flat cars.
[cpg_imagefixthumb:8434] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8433]Which was followed by a friendly horn blast from the cab.
And then a final shot of the trailing power heading over the inlet to the cove, with a nice reflection in the non-frozen part of the cove
[cpg_imagefixthumb:8432]After that, it was back in the car to head south. But from the sounds of things on the Amtrak frequency, they wouldn’t be getting out right away. So I opted to alleviate my growling stomach, and head for a little grub before heading back to the office.
Thanks for looking!
Tom

Tom:
Saw some troubling news regarding Pfizer in Ct in the Providence Journal this morning.
Also heard it yesterday on the radio. Hope it does not adversely affect you.

Joe-
Thanks for the concern, but nope, it doesn’t affect me. Those cuts are in the Research & Development part of the company, and I work for Global Manufacturing. For now, my job seems to be somewhat secure…but as we know nowadays, nothing is guaranteed…

Tom,
I also heard the news about Pfizer, but figured you weren’t in R & D. Working for a living stinks, but it sure beats being unemployed!!
I did find one problem with the blog, lots of trains – but NO FOOD. Tell us more about breakfast!! 🙂

You got that right Marty!
Food? OK, I had a gourmet meal from Burger King, consisting of a Double Crossanwich, medium hash browns, and a large Diet Coke. Happy?? 🙂
Tom,
Yup
Food is an important part of ANY railfan trip report. I am partial to McD’s big breakfast or sausage & egg McMuffin. Nothing, however, beats 3 eggs, crispy bacon, homefries & toast! I ALWAYS carry some wipes in the car, can’t get grease on the camera !! 🙂
