11/15/07 – Color in the crappy weather

Well, I was able to head out yesterday into the crappy weather we were having. I figured with the upcoming wind forecasted for the weekend, I didn’t have much time left with the color on the trees. So any weather would do. I set my sights on Mill Cove in Ledyard for the morning activities.

At least it wasn’t raining yet when I got to Mill Cove. The radio told me that NR-2 was south of MP12 and about 15 minutes out. So that gave me time to do my walk, and then get into position. On my walk around the park, I decided my shot was better down at the south end of the cove instead of from the park itself. The colors looked a bit better down there than at the north end by Red Top.

Once I finished up my walk, I headed back to the car when NR-2 reported that they were south of MP5, putting them less than a mile away. A quick drive to the south got me into position as NR-2 was sounding for the crossing at Red Top. I got out, and snapped a few shots of the train heading onto the causeway.

Next up I wanted the wide angle lens. So as the train was passing by the Harvard Boat House, the lens swap came and I was ready for NR-2 crossing the inlet at the south end of the cove.

And a couple of the tail end heading for the south end

From there it was back into the car for a possible catch at the Thames River drawbridge. I got there as NR-2 was approaching the signals, and the Shore Line dispatcher decided he could slip NR-2 out ahead of 171. Got a shot of the train heading onto the bridge in Groton

Then another of the train passing over the drawbridge itself

Not too bad. I also noticed that the crane barge was on the south side of the bridge, near the west pier. Steel must be starting to be erected there soon.

Thanks for looking!
Tom
