As things worked out yesterday, I was able to get out and take advantage of the abundant sunshine that graced southeastern Connecticut in the morning. Not only was the weather beautiful, but I was also able to catch two trains on two different railroads within a matter of minutes. And to top things off, and I found a new spot to shoot the Providence & Worcester from.
So a few minutes opened up in my schedule yesterday, and I headed out to see what I could catch. It was a bit later than usual, so I wasn’t too hopeful on catching the P&W along the Thames, but I’ll take what could get.
On my way north, the scanner woke up with NR-2 reporting that they were south of MP5. Hmmm, about the only place I could try and get to is the USS Nautilus or Fairview. I figured I’ll try the Nautilus.
As I was heading up Military Highway, a thought crossed my mind. The spot where I shot a couple submarines just south of the Nautilus is quite open, and might be worth a try shooting NR-2 there. What the hell, it was worth a try.
Just as I was parking the car, I could see NR-2 coming through the crossing to the north at the Sub Force Museum/USS Nautilus. A quick hustle down the hill, and I was in position for what turned out to be a pretty nice angle!
[cpg_imagefixthumb:8838] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8837]Pretty cool! So next I figured I’d head to the parking lot south of the Thames River drawbridge and catch them heading across.
While I was waiting in the lot by the river, I overheard an Amtrak foreman asking NR-2 if they were heading east. They replied nope, they were heading to Midway first. OK, well that changes things! So I hopped back in the car and headed over to the spot east of the Groton tower.
While waiting there, Amtrak 190 came into the picture – apparently NR-2 would be following them. So of course I got a few shots of 190 approaching and speeding past me.
[cpg_imagefixthumb:8836] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8835] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8834] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8833] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8832]Not more than a couple minutes after 190 cleared me, it was NR-2s turn to come out onto the Northeast Corridor, cross over to track 4, and head down to Tilcon down by Midway.
[cpg_imagefixthumb:8831] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8830] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8829] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8828] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8827][cpg_imagefixthumb:8826] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8825]With two trains, at two locations within a matter of a half an hour in the bag, I figured I had reached my bag limit. So I packed up and headed back to the office.
Thanks for looking!
