Tuesday Amtrak and P&W

OK, catching up a bit here. I made it out on Tuesday for a bit – not only to catch some train action, but to also put my new high end point & shoot through it’s paces. I picked up a Canon G9 mainly for quick shots of the kids, but I figured I’d give it a try trackside. So I headed out to try to catch my usual fare – Providence & Worcester train NR-2, and possibly some Amtrak action along the Thames River. Well, I got that, along with some updates on the Thames River drawbridge progress.

On my way out of the parking lot, I heard NR-2 report that they were south of MP5, making it impossible for me to get them on home rails. So I set my sights on the overlook just south of the Thames River drawbridge.

When I got there, I noticed something – the workers had placed one of the pulleys that will be used in raising and lowering the new lift span – this one on the east tower. The 20D was called to duty for these.

And workers were placing the holders for the south pulley on the west tower

While waiting for some rail action, I got a shot of a pair of fishing vessels moored to the state pier

Then the rail action came along – and I decided to use the G9 for these shots. First up was 190

Back to the 20D to get a shot of the workers on the west tower

And a tugboat working with the barges around the bridge

Then 171 with the G9

Now the tugboat with a barge moving to the bridge, back with the 20D

A couple minutes later, NR-2 came off of the Groton wye, and onto the drawbridge. Back to the G9 for these shots

And a quick change to the 20D to get a shot of NR-2s trailing power passing by a bunch of workers on the base of the east tower

By then, it was time to head back to the office for the rest of the day.

Thanks for looking!
