And now for part two of my coverage of the Thames River drawbridge swap out. Obviously I missed the actual swap, but I did get down to Groton the day after the span was changed. But I did get a little bonus – I caught the old span being towed away down the Thames River towards its fate – the scrappers torch.
I got down to Groton early in the morning last Friday to check things out. I was greeted by a scene that had the new span in place, and the old drawbridge on a barge sitting next to the bridge. Not long after I got there, a tug began to pull the barge away from the bridge, and move it to the State Pier, where another larger tug was waiting. Soon after the barge was tied to the pier, the larger blue tug moved in and grabbed it to head south through the Thames River.
Needless to say, I photographed the journey of the nearly 100 year old span from its original place, to the mouth of the Thames River. A TV videographer dropped in while I was doing my thing, so of course I got some shots of him getting footage of the old span and new bridge. But instead of blathering on about each photo, here’s the entire list of 48 shots from the morning.
