P&W NR2, Thames River draw, Amtrak 171, a couple seagulls & the John P. Wronowski

The hazy days of summer are still hanging on around here. But I did manage to get out for my walk today, and catch some action – both of the rail and nautical variety. I bagged Providence & Worcester train NR-2 at Mill Cove in Ledyard, took a few shots of the ongoing work for the Amtrak Thames River drawbridge replacement project, grabbed a shot of Amtrak train 171 crossing the Thames River, got a couple seagulls (one with P&W NR-2 at Mill Cove), and photoed the tugboat John P. Wronowski heading north in the Thames River. Not too bad for less than an hour out and about.

So the morning started out at Mill Cove. I got there just as NR-2 was clearing MP5, so that meant a quick sprint up the hill at the south end of the cove was in order. I got there just as they were sounding for the Red Top crossing. Seconds later, NR-2 rolled onto the causeway. But something caught my eye – a seagull took off from the water along the causeway, and was pacing NR-2.

And a wider shot as the bird crossed in front of NR-2 without incident

And finally a shot of NR-2s trailing power clearing the curve at the top of the cove.

With the cut of Tilcon cars on the head end, that meant they were going over to Midway first, and since time was short today, I’d have to break off from NR-2 at this point and head towards the office. But not without stopping to shoot the continuing progress on the Thames River drawbridge replacement project. Work continues on the east tower.

After the last shot, I looked to the left and saw a seagull sitting perched on a piling. But instead of just shooting him sitting there, I waited for him to take off to get a shot.

Then as my eye came off of the camera, something caught it downriver. It was the tugboat John P. Wronowski heading north in the river.

Then a familiar rumble and rattle was coming from the north – Amtrak train 171 was rattling across the Thames River drawbridge.

And to close things out I got a few more shots of the Wronowski heading for the drawbridge

A quick look at the watch told me I needed to get back, so the gear went in the bag, and I went the rest of the way south.

Thanks for looking!
