Well, as it were, we got a little more snow last night – and it was a bit on the wet side, so it really stuck to the trees. You know what that means – yep, try to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 somewhere around Ledyard, CT amongst the snow covered trees. Today I decided to head a bit north of Mill Cove and try the Red Top area. I got into the area just as the train was reporting back to the dispatcher that they were 15 minutes out of the Sub Base. Perfect, this gave me a bit of time to pick my spot and which lens I’d be using. After looking around at the angles, I decided the telephoto was the proper choice – it was lightly snowing, and the telephoto would really accentuate the flakes falling around the train. A few minutes later, I heard them blowing for a crossing to the north, so I grabbed my camera and got into position. An orange/yellow glow started to pierce through the snowfall in the distance, slowly rising above the crest of the grade:

A few seconds later, the entire train was up on the top of the grade, racing towards me:

Then they hit the cut just north of Red Top:

And hit the sign at Red Top, with the snow covered trees in the background:

Once they passed, I decided to take adantage of the unusually calm Thames River. Here’s my favorite two of this shoot – snow covered trees in the background, and a diffuse reflection of the train in the river. Just as a point of reference, Mill Cove is on the opposite side of the train in these shots:
