Well, I had today off from work, so with the sunny skies this morning, I figured I’d take advantage of it and redo my high angle shot of Providence & Worcester train NR-2 snaking along the Thames River with the Mohegan Sun casino in the background (here’s the original). Plus it worked out that we were planning on taking the kids to the Mystic Aquarium. At least this time I wouldn’t have to walk both ways to the spot.
We got to the commuter lot off of Route 12 in Preston about 9am, well ahead of NR-2. So my wife stayed with the kids in the car (she camed armed with coloring books & activities to keep the girls occupied while I was out doing my thing), and I loaded up my gear and started my hike.
While walking out, NR-2 passed by the out of service Jewett City detector – I had plenty of time to get out to my spot ahead of the train’s arrival. A few minutes later, I was at my spot. Waitiing… A good 20 minutes later NR-2 reported that they were south of MP13, putting them about 10 minutes from my position. So I picked my spot and angle, and paitently waited for their arrival.
As I was waiting for the train to come into view, the clouds started to move in from the north, slowly obscuring the sapphire blue sky that was above the Thames River valley.
Right on cue about 10 minutes later, I heard horns just to the north. That was my prompt to get into position and frame up the shot. Of course, the clouds filled up the sky in my frame by now (the sky is bright blue just above the top of the photo below). Oh, well. A moment later, NR-2 came into view, and I clicked off a few frames. It was quite windy, so with the clouds and wind, the shot wasn’t ideal, but it’ll work for now.

Hey, that just gives me a couple reasons to get out there and shoot it again!
Thanks for looking!
