Due to some scheduling constraints, I couldn’t get out at my usual time to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 on their southbound trip. So since I needed to head to the bank at lunch, I kept the scanner on to see if I could get lucky & catch NR-2 on their return trip. Now that they’re not interchanging with the New England Central Railroad in New London, they’re usually heading back home in the 12-1pm range. Maybe I could score a hit today…
On my way back to the office, the Amtrak Shore Line dispatcher came on the radio trying to clear up some foul time at Shaw’s Cove in New London so NR-2 could get through. I thought about possible shots, and the best option for this time of day was to the south of the Thames River drawbridge on the Groton side. The bonus to that is it was right on my way back to the office.
I got to my spot just as NR-2 got the signal to the west of Shaw’s Cove and began to head east towards the river. Glancing across the Thames I noticed that the train was quite short – only light engines today. A minute or so later, they headed off of terra firma in New London, and crossed the Thames River, passing the work crews preparing the footings for the new movable span’s towers.

Once the pair of GEs got on the Groton side, it was time to head back a bit further south to the parking lot. Not a bad quick diversion after a bank run.
Thanks for looking!
