P&W NR-2 at the Nautilus & Fairview

Another crappy morning weather-wise today. But I tore myself away from the office to get a couple quick shots of Providence & Worcester train NR-2 in Groton in between the sporadic raindrops.

I was hoping to get them at Mill Cove, but as things turned out, as I hit Military Highway NR-2 reported that they were south of MP5. My only option was the USS Nautilus overlook park. So I hightailed it there to hopefully get in position before the train’s arrival.

I did get there about a half minute before NR-2, so I scoped things out. Still not much color on the trees, so I opted for the angle that would get me some of what little was there. Just as I was swapping to the fisheye lens, the crossing at the Nautilus activated and NR-2 began to sound for the crossing. I got one decent shot out of the series there. It didn’t help that the trailing power was facing south, so I could only get the ass-end of the unit into the frame. Oh, well…at least the first one worked out.

A quick hop into the car, and a jaunt to the south to pick up NR-2 as they rolled through Fairview yard. Which surprisingly, had a bit more color on the trees.

A friendly smile & wave from Rod as they passed came next, then as they were heading past me, Rod kept looking out the window. What the hell, it seemed to work OK…

And a shot of the lead unit rounding the bend at the south end of the yard amongst more fall color

Not sure how much longer NR-2 would have to wait at the signal, I opted to grab a quick shot of the Thames River drawbridge’s new counterweight, today surrounded by the final cross bracing on the outside of the tower.

You may be asking yourselves “why the hell does he keep taking pictures of that damned bridge at every little update?”  You’ll see once the bridge is complete…heh…

A quick look at the watch told me it was time to pack up the gear and head back to the office, ending my quick jaunt for the morning.

Thanks for looking!
