Iona Island on the way home

CSX Iona Island NYA couple weeks back, I had to take a short-notice work trip down to New Jersey (pictures from that trip are here).  But the different thing about this trip is I drove down, instead of my usual mode of transportation – the Acela.  So on the way home, I swung by Iona Island in Stony Point, NY for a bit.  Since it was over midday, the question became would I see a freight on the west side of the Hudson or not?

I had a couple hours I could spend there, so I set up camp on the north side of the island, waiting for something to come by.  But for most of the time, the scanner was silent.  The only movement came in the form of Amtrak and MetroNorth runs on the other side of the river (nothing special, so I’m not putting anything up here), so I took some shots of the trackwork in my boredom.  After about 2 hours there, I decided to call it quits.  But as I was packing up my gear, the scanner finally crackled with what sounded like a CSX job calling a southbound signal to the north of me.  OK, maybe I could wait around for a bit longer.

While waiting, a freighter also came down the Hudson, so I managed a few shots of that as it passed by.  And not too much longer after that, the CSX southbound came into view, so I got a few shots of that passing through the cut at the northern end of the island.  That last few minutes made the 2+ hour wait worthwhile.
