An all-stone NR-2

This week I’m taking a class whose schedule is set to the Central time zone.  So it’s starting later than usual, and I’m also staying later.  So, to make up for things, I’m coming into the office later than usual.  And with Providence & Worcester train NR-2s early morning schedule, the timing has worked out that I’ve been able to catch them a couple times this week.  Yesterday was no different, and with the gloomy weather forecasts for today & the rest of the week, I figured it would be worth it to catch NR-2 one more time.

As usual, on my way south towards Groton, I had the scanner going.  And as I had done on Tuesday, I came across Route 2A, and down Route 12 to try to meet up with NR-2.  But this time things were different – I hadn’t heard anything over the scanner on my trip down.  Oh, well, maybe I wouldn’t catch them this time.

As I was heading south on Route 12, passing by Dow Chemical in Ledyard, the scanner crackled NR-2 report that they were south of MP12 and about 15 minutes from the Sub Base.  OK, cool, things would work out after all.  So I headed for Mill Cove.  I figured that was the best shot with the lower sun – I did scout around the Hurlbutt Road area to see if there were any interesting vantage points.  Well, needless to say, there really weren’t, so I headed for the old standby.

Not long after I got there, I heard horns to the north as NR-2 came through Dow – that was my usual signal to get into position.

A few moments later, NR-2 appeared, and I got a few of my standard shots.  First a few with the 40D and a telephoto lens

Then switching to the 20D with the wide angle

And back to the telephoto to get a pan shot of the last two cars rolling past

What was interesting about this train, was that it was all stone hoppers – both for Tilcon and O&G Industries.  Nothing else…

With the clock approaching the time I needed to be at the office to attend class on time, I packed up the gear and headed for work.

Thanks for looking!
Tom
