11/2/07 – A slightly different look at PW NR2 at Mill Cove & the Thames River

What else is new, I’m a bit behind. At least it’s only a couple days, and not more…heh… Going back to Friday morning here – I was able to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 during my (nearly) daily walk. Still not all that much in the way of fall color down in southeastern Connecticut, but it’s better than nothing. I ended up catching them at Mill Cove in Ledyard, and again across the Thames River in Groton. But both places, I tried to tweak things a bit and try some slightly different angles.

This time after my walk at Mill Cove, I didn’t head all the way to the south end of the cove, but instead settled in about midway down. It gives a subtly different angle to the path of the train – nothing profound, but a little twist. I got into position as NR-2 sounded for the crossings to the north at Dow Chemical, giving me enough time to park the car and get on the other side of the guardrail. First shot was of NR-2 passing milepost 4

Then one with the NRG generation plant across the river in the background

And some of the color over in Montville

Then the head end crossing the inlet to the cove

At that point, I figured a swap for the wide angle was in order for the trailing power.

Next up was the overlook south of the Thames River drawbridge. As I got there, I decided I was a little bored with the usual telephoto shots and kept the wide angle zoom on the 20D, and tried to incorporate some of the scenery on the Groton side of the Thames.

As NR-2 moved onto the bridge, I got a vertical shot with some of the docks in the foreground

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5173]

Then a horizontal shot with the docks and some of the homes on the river

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5172]

And an even wider shot, incorporating more scenery, as well as the entire train

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5171]

Finally, I went back to the stand by telephoto and got a shot of NR-2s trailing power heading for the work area

As the train headed onto the New London shore, I packed up and headed back to the office.

Thanks for looking!
