both the Thames River and Mill Cove were as smooth as glass.

This morning I was able to head out at the usual time, and ended up making it to Mill Cove ahead of P&W NR-2 by a few minutes. While waiting I pondered the idea of changing up a few things when I was shooting NR-2 today – you know, just to mix things up a bit. So I thought about a couple different framings both here at Mill Cove and down at Fairview.

A few minutes later, NR-2 called home reporting that they were south of MP5, so I got into position at the south end of the glassy cove. As they came into view, I put one of the different framings into practice. Instead of my usual focusing on only the train, I panned a bit to the right, including the dock, boats & gazebo in the background, in addition to NR-2

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9744]

Then a standard shot of them rounding the bend

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9743]

A cropped pano of them with the boats

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9742]

Then a quartet of standard shots using both the telephoto and wide angle

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9741] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9740] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9739] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9738]

OK ,time to try and get ahead of them down at Fairview.

Today, unlike most days, the traffic lights cooperated, and I was greeted by green lights as I headed for the bottom end of Fairview yard. So I parked the car, and started walking a bit north. I was aiming to shoot around the switch a 100 or so yards north. On the way, I got a couple shots of passing ships – one US Coast Guard training vessel, and one US Navy Sub Base Police boat

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9737] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9736]

And as soon as I got up to the switch, NR-2 came into view at the top end of Fairview Yard. A few moments later, they came close enough for the telephoto.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9735]

Then a switch to the wide angle for the shot I had in mind

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9734]

As they rolled past, the crew gave a nice wave out the window, and as the rolled on, I got a couple of different low angle shots, incorporating part of the switch into the framing.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9733] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9732]

And finally a telephoto of the power rounding the bend to the south of me

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9731]

As they pulled to a stop, they were starting to do some switching work. So I decided to head back to the office and call it a morning…well, almost. I got one shot of the Coast Guard training vessel as it was passing by the State Pier

[cpg_imagefixthumb:9730]

Then I called it a morning, and headed back to the office for the remainder of the day.

Thanks for looking!
Tom

Despite a hazy, foggy start, this morning ended up being pretty nice weather-wise. Along with the sunny, and somewhat hazy skies, there wasn’t a breath of wind. And when there’s no wind, there’s sure to be calm, glass-like water. Today wasn’t an exception –
