Took a vacation day from work today, so I’ve got a little time to catch up on some posts.\u00a0 For this one I’ve got some stuff from Stoddard Cove and Willimantic from Tuesday.\u00a0 I was able ot head out for a walk in the morning and catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 and New England Central train NERWNE from Stoddard Cove in Ledyard, then later in the evening, I got a shot of NERWNE’s power sitting in Willimantic waiting for a ride north to Palmer.<\/p>\n
With the turn of the weather this week, I had to get out for my walk a couple times.\u00a0 Tuesday I was able to get out for a bit and do my thing up by Stoddard Cove in Ledyard, CT.\u00a0 I got there well in advance of P&W NR-2 – by the time I got up there, they reported to the Worcester dispatcher that they were north of Norwich.\u00a0 So I made my way down the tracks to the south end of Stoddard Cove.<\/p>\n
Along the way, I got a shot of the tracks over the causeway.<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9080]\n
And a shot of a swan swimming by<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9079]\n
As I was walking out, the scanner came alive with\u00a0 NECR NERWNE finishing up work\u00a0 in Montville, and getting ready to head north.\u00a0 A little while later – just as NR-2 reported that they were south of MP12 and 15 minutes from the Sub Base –\u00a0 WNE came into view across the Thames to the south<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9078] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9077]\n
Then NR-2 came into view beyond the Mohegan-Pequot bridge<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9076]\n
Looks like the two would be converging on my position!\u00a0 One final shot of WNE before I had to get into position for NR-2’s arrival<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9075]\n
Just then, NR-2 came into view to the north in Preston<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9074]\n
Then it was time to take advantage of the low tide, and walk along the southern rim of the cove to take adavantage of the work of the P&W’s brushcutting crew.\u00a0 Not long after getting into position, NR-2 came into view<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9073]\n
And they rolled over the inlet to the Cove, past a fisherman<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9072]\n
Then a wide shot of the train rolling along Stoddard Cove<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9071]\n
As the train rolled past – and it was a good sized train, maybe 40-50 cars – I got a couple shots of the fisherman with the cars heading south<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9070] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9069]\n
And some of the loaded gons of steel rolling past a swan in her nest<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9068]\n
Then one more of a cut of Tilcon hoppers on the tail end of NR-2 rolling past the fisherman<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9067]\n
As the NR-2s marker rolled past me, I made my way back up to track level.\u00a0 Maybe the NECR job was across the river.<\/p>\n
When I got up to track level, I saw NERWNE directly across the river from me, so I got a few shots of them heading north<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9066] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9065] [cpg_imagefixthumb:9064]\n
Then that was it for the morning.\u00a0 I hiked back to the car and made my way back to the office.<\/p>\n
Later in the evening, I had to go to Willimantic for a photo club meeting.\u00a0 On my way there, I spotted NERWNE’s power sitting in the north end of the Willimantic yard waiting for a ride north.<\/p>\n[cpg_imagefixthumb:9063]\n
And that put a close on a pretty good day trackside.<\/p>\n
