this time it took place at Stoddard Cove in Ledyard, and the usual suspect of Providence & Worcester train NR-2. But because of the magic of technology, I was able to get two angles of the train at pretty much the same time – basically the same thing as being in two places at once.

So I got out a bit early and figured I could make it up to Stoddard Hill before NR-2’s arrival. As I was heading out of the parking lot, the scanner woke up with the Worcester dispatcher checking on NR-2s progress. They reported back that they were south of MP14 – OK, I should have just enough time to get up to Ledyard, and hike out to my spot at the south end of the cove.

A little while later, I get to the parking area, gather my gear – including my modified, and working after wet radio remote trigger – and started walking towards the river. As I was walking south along the river, a chirp came across my scanner. Looking back over my shoulder I saw a trio of headlights to the north – it was NR-2 north of the Mohegan-Pequot bridge. Should be perfect timing.

I got to the south end of the cove, and first thing I set up the 20D on a tripod about 20 yards east of the tracks with the wide angle lens on it. Then set up the radio remote to trigger it. Once that was set, I headed back to the edge of the ballast to get my head on telephoto shot with the 40D. Just then, NR-2 came into view from under the bridge to the north.

About a minute later, the train crossed into Ledyard, and came into view.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:8599]

And as the train rolled into the sunlight, I got a shot of them crossing the inlet to Stoddard Cove

[cpg_imagefixthumb:8598]

Finally, a moment later, I triggered the 20D, getting a shot over the water

[cpg_imagefixthumb:8597]

Well, that worked out rather well. I could have framed the 20D a bit better, but not too bad for the first attempt. Anyways, as the train rolled past, Rod gave a hello on the horn. After they cleared me, I made my way back to the car, and headed to the office for the rest of the day.

Thanks for looking!
Tom

OK, two of three –
