gettin’ closer. Here’s a look back to October 27th when I took a quick trip out on a sunny morning to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 around the Ledyard/Groton area.

Well, I got out a bit later than I would have liked, but I made my way north, hoping to catch NR-2 somewhere in Ledyard. As I was heading onto Route 12, I heard NR-2 report to the Worcester dispatcher that they were south of MP12 – giving me about 10 minutes to pick a spot and get there. With the sun being lower in the sky this time of year, that limited my spots, so I opted for an old stand-by – Mill Cove in Ledyard.

I got there and was greeted by a pretty calm cove, which should give a nice reflection of the train passing by. So I set up at the south end of the cove and waited for NR-2s arrival. A few minutes later, horns to the north made their way down the Thames valley – NR-2 was heading through Dow Chemical.

A minute or so later, NR-2 came into view at the top end of the cove, and made their way onto the causeway between the cove and the Thames River. I got a couple standard shots of them rolling along the calm water

[cpg_imagefixthumb:8217] [cpg_imagefixthumb:8216]

Then one final shot as they passed by me heading south, and a bird was heading north

[cpg_imagefixthumb:8215]

As I was walking back to the car, I started to think about my next spot. Maybe I could make it down to the bottom end of Fairview ahead of the train. Hey, it was worth a try…

Well, luckily they were going to be doing some work around the yard, so I was able to get ahead of them. I got into position just in time to catch Tom the conductor get off of the train to the north, preparing to switch out Spicer Gas.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:8214]

Then the train continued south towards me

[cpg_imagefixthumb:8213]

And a final shot of Tom riding the train south towards Spicer, which is near the Groton wye

[cpg_imagefixthumb:8212]

At that time, since they were working Spicer, I wouldn’t have time to stick around and catch them crossing the Thames, so I called it a morning and headed back to the office for the rest of the day.

Thanks for looking!
Tom

Still playing catch-up with the posts –
