I was able to head out at my normal time to try to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 heading south through Ledyard. Well, as you can tell by the title of this post, that didn’t happen. Just as I was about to give up on catching anything, when the New England Central went rolling by on the other side of the Thames River. Hey, at least I caught something…

The day started like normal – I headed out at the normal time, and had the scanner doing its thing. The entire way north to Stoddard Cove the P&W frequency remained silent. On my way by the Sub Base, I heard a marker, but that was the NECR heading south on the other side of the river. But with the heavy haze/fog in the air, shots were next to impossible. So I opted to continue north on my futile search for the P&W.

Having shot exactly zero frames, and not any sign of NR-2 on the scanner, I had to turn around and head back to the office. But on my way south, I heard NECR train NERWNE tone up the dispatcher. That only meant one thing – they were done in New London, and heading back north. So I made my way to Mill Cove to at least get a couple shots of NERWNE across the river. At least there the haze wasn’t that thick.

I got to Erickson Park about a minute before NERWNE, so I grabbed my camera and got into position. As soon as the train came into view, I got a shot of them pulling north.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7438]

Then a second shot a bit later of the train passing through a clearing in the trees.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7437]

Hey, at least I salvaged a couple shots out of a day that seemed to be destined a shutout!

Thanks for looking!
Tom

Intentions and reality do sometimes diverge, and today was one of those times.
