The 23rd was a foggy morning, and I was able to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 at the USS Nautilus overlook park and crossing the Thames River drawbridge. As it turned out, this was the last NR-2 to cross over the old drawbridge span – the next day not only would the removal of the old span begin, but also would my family’s mini-vacation… But enough of that…on to this foggy post.

First stop on the way north was the drawbridge – workers were starting to dismantle the connection between the counterweight and moveable span. The contractor changed plans, and the counterweight would stay in place so they weren’t going to delay the swap out of the drawbridge again.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7309] [cpg_imagefixthumb:7308] [cpg_imagefixthumb:7307]

Then it was time to head north to try to catch NR-2 somewhere. But as I turned onto Military Highway, NR-2 reported that they were south of MP5. That only left one option for me – the USS Nautilus Overlook Park. So that’s where I went.

I got there a couple minutes before NR-2 arrived, so I scouted the angles, and opted for the usual angle overlooking the water.

Moments later, the crossing activated, and NR-2 came rolling into view.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7306]

Then passed by the first nuclear submarine

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7305]

And a final shot of the trailing power passing through a hole in the trees.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7304]

OK, now off to the drawbridge for some shots of NR-2 passing over the old span. So I headed for the 2nd parking lot south of the drawbridge.

While waiting there for the Shore Line dispatcher to give NR-2 permission to head onto Amtrak property, I got a shot of a passing bird

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7303]

And crews cutting under the pivot point on the drawbridge

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7302]

Not long after that, NR-2 came rolling onto the bridge, crossing the Thames River

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7301] [cpg_imagefixthumb:7300] [cpg_imagefixthumb:7299] [cpg_imagefixthumb:7298] [cpg_imagefixthumb:7297]

Then I noticed something unusual – another fan! So of course I got a shot of them as NR-2 crossed the river

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7296]

Finally two more shots of NR-2 making their way across the river

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7295] [cpg_imagefixthumb:7294]

And as NR-2 completed their move into New London, I got a couple more shots of the work going on at the west end of the drawbridge

[cpg_imagefixthumb:7293]

At that point, I had to get back to the office, so I called it a morning.

Thanks for looking!
Tom

Ahhh, finally approaching current times.
