{"id":3987,"date":"2015-08-30T09:53:42","date_gmt":"2015-08-30T13:53:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/?p=3987"},"modified":"2015-08-30T09:53:42","modified_gmt":"2015-08-30T13:53:42","slug":"2015-trains-photo-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nanosphoto.com\/blog\/2015-trains-photo-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"2015 TRAINS Photo Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3990\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/advance-thumb.jpg?resize=250%2C188\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/>Imagine getting some great news that you&#8217;d love to share with everyone you know (and even more), but you can&#8217;t for a couple of months. \u00a0Well, that happened to me recently &#8211; and I&#8217;ll tell you, it&#8217;s been pretty hard keeping my yap shut. \u00a0A couple of months ago, I got a call at home from Kalmbach Publishing &#8211; at the other end of the phone was the Production Editor or TRAINS Magazine with some news&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Angela Pusztai-Pasternak, the TRAINS editor in question, called to congratulate me for winning the Second Prize (which is actually third place, behind the Grand Prize and First Prize winners) in the magazine&#8217;s annual photography contest! \u00a0But there was one string attached &#8211; I couldn&#8217;t say anything about winning the prize until the October 2015 issue was released. \u00a0Obviously the magazine wanted to keep things quiet, and have a much bigger splash for the winners when the printed copies hit mailboxes. \u00a0Which was especially hard for me for one main reason &#8211; this was the first major, juried\u00a0photo contest I entered where I ended up placing (I&#8217;ve received &#8220;Judges Also Liked&#8221; honors &#8211; essentially a runner up &#8211;\u00a0in two of the Center for Railroad Photography and Art&#8217;s annual Creative Photography Awards) &#8211; hell, I came in third place out of over 700 entries. \u00a0That&#8217;s not too bad! \u00a0So despite my obvious excitement, my mouth (and keyboard) remained quiet&#8230;until now.<\/p>\n<p>Yep, as you can tell by the lead-off paragraph, I got my advance copy a couple weeks ago, issues are now arriving at subscriber&#8217;s mailboxes, and retail versions are making their way to hobby shops, book stores and news stands across the country as I type this. \u00a0So here&#8217;s a little sneak preview for you, the faithful readers of my blog. \u00a0Granted, it&#8217;s a low-res, cellphone\u00a0snapshot, but it gives you a feel for the photo. \u00a0But to get the full impact &#8211; and to see the other winners of the contest, pick up the issue when it hits retail outlets (should be soon &#8211; most hobby shops and larger retailers like Barnes &amp; Noble and Walmart do carry TRAINS). \u00a0Speaking of the other winners, the two gentlemen that placed ahead of me are both excellent photographers, and I truly admire their work &#8211; and the Grand Prize winner is a friend from Missouri, with whom I speak with often about subjects around photography. \u00a0We even got a chance to shoot together for an afternoon a couple years ago, where I gave him, his wife and a friend of his a quickie tour of southeastern Connecticut&#8217;s railroads. \u00a0Anyways&#8230;here&#8217;s my shot, spread across two pages of THE Magazine of Railroading.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3991\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/pages-587x407.jpg?resize=479%2C332\" alt=\"pages\" width=\"479\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After some emailed requests, I&#8217;ve made prints of the photo available up on the store site. \u00a0Simply click the thumbnail below to be transported directly to the photo. \u00a0As always, all purchased prints <em><strong>will not<\/strong><\/em> contain any watermarks &#8211; just the photo.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/nanosphoto.smugmug.com\/buy\/30836405_bPZkjd\/4311406176_m4JH2KR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.nanosphoto.com\/Railroads\/DetailAbstract\/i-m4JH2KR\/1\/S\/20141217-1620916842-_MG_4002-S.jpg?w=400\" alt=\" Valley Railroad Fireman Mike tosses a shovel-full of coal into the firebox of Mikado No. 3025 as the train pulls a North Pole Express.
