{"id":3584,"date":"2014-03-06T08:07:05","date_gmt":"2014-03-06T12:07:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/?p=3584"},"modified":"2014-03-06T08:07:05","modified_gmt":"2014-03-06T12:07:05","slug":"morning-on-the-grafton-upton","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nanosphoto.com\/blog\/morning-on-the-grafton-upton\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning on the Grafton &#038; Upton"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nanosphoto.smugmug.com\/buy\/37486775_pBZ9v5\/3108031455_PgHFMf5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.nanosphoto.com\/Railroads\/Blog-Posts\/2014-01-20---GURR\/i-PgHFMf5\/0\/S\/20140120-1320706060-_MG_7644-S.jpg?resize=240%2C160\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>I was off to a slow start in 2014, photographically speaking &#8211; my first outing to shoot railroads wasn&#8217;t until January 20th. \u00a0And as a result of the slow start, the old blog here has been a little stagnant of late. \u00a0But I&#8217;m trying to change that &#8211; first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/04\/a-dozen-miles-in-a-decade-a-gallery-exhibit\/\">Monday&#8217;s post about my upcoming gallery exhibit<\/a>, and now this. \u00a0With the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, I as well as my kids had the day off. \u00a0Taking advantage of that, my younger daughter and I headed up to North Grafton, MA to spend the morning along the G&amp;U. \u00a0Sure it was cold, and there was plenty of snow on the ground, but we both had a great time doing a little daddy-daughter bonding &#8211; both of us with cameras in hand.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Callie and I headed out of the house well before dawn to make the 2 hour trek to North Grafton, Massachusetts, which is the home base of the Grafton &amp; Upton Railroad. \u00a0Having already given the operations manager a heads-up that we&#8217;d be up there (he&#8217;s a good personal friend of mine), we headed straight for the office to find out what the day had in store. \u00a0After checking in, we made our way outside just as the sun was rising over the treeline. \u00a0My first shot of the morning was of the 1801 sitting quietly<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.nanosphoto.com\/Railroads\/Blog-Posts\/2014-01-20---GURR#3108031455_PgHFMf5-A-LB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.nanosphoto.com\/Railroads\/Blog-Posts\/2014-01-20---GURR\/i-PgHFMf5\/0\/S\/20140120-1320706060-_MG_7644-S.jpg?w=400\" alt=\" Grafton &amp; Upton Railroad #1801 sits in the railroad\"  \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grafton &amp; Upton Railroad #1801 sits in the railroad&#8217;s North Grafton, MA yard just after sunrise.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While getting the power ready for the day, it was determined that their F7A needed some water, so it was pulled off of the rest of the engine consist for the day, and shuffled back towards the shop at the north end of the yard to get the needed fluids.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.nanosphoto.com\/Railroads\/Blog-Posts\/2014-01-20---GURR#3108032753_7zq2q6Z-A-LB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/photos.nanosphoto.com\/Railroads\/Blog-Posts\/2014-01-20---GURR\/i-7zq2q6Z\/0\/S\/20140120-1320706060-_MG_7740-S.jpg?w=400\" alt=\" Grafton &amp; Upton Railroad F7A #1501 moves around the North Grafton yard.\"  \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grafton &amp; Upton Railroad F7A #1501 moves around the North Grafton yard.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After servicing the EMD, they put the train back together and headed south out of the yard, which meant one thing &#8211; the chase was on!
