{"id":3420,"date":"2013-10-03T12:04:49","date_gmt":"2013-10-03T16:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/?p=3420"},"modified":"2013-10-03T12:04:49","modified_gmt":"2013-10-03T16:04:49","slug":"two-weeks-in-nj-week-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nanosphoto.com\/blog\/two-weeks-in-nj-week-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Weeks in NJ &#8211; Week 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-3422\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 10px;\" alt=\"NYSW at Port Jervis, NY\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20130915-420204365-_MG_3366-S-300x200.jpg?resize=210%2C140\" width=\"210\" height=\"140\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nanosphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20130915-420204365-_MG_3366-S.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nanosphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/20130915-420204365-_MG_3366-S.jpg?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/>The last couple weeks of September brought me back to northern New Jersey for work again, and of course I managed to get out and shoot a bit. \u00a0I visited some of my usual haunts &#8211; both in daylight and under cover of darkness, as well as added a couple of others spots &#8211; including a late-night stop on the New York, Susquehanna &amp; Western. \u00a0This was also a trip where I aimed to experiment a bit more with my nighttime flash setups &#8211; I did mix that experimentation in with some of the more run-of-the-mill stuff. \u00a0Read on to check it all out&#8230;well, at least the first week in this post&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>To kick off my trip on the 15th of September, I decided to hit up the New York, Susquehanna &amp; Western, shooting their southbound job &#8211; SU-100 &#8211; at Port Jervis and Warwick, New York, which was a first for me. \u00a0I&#8217;ve never shot the NYSW, and only shot at Port Jervis once with Bob LaMay about 10 years ago (while shooting a pair of Morristown &amp; Erie FL-9s). \u00a0Not being familiar with that part of the Empire State, I met up with fellow photographer and friend Mike Foley who hails from the area, and knows the roads between Port Jervis and Warwick.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we met up in Port Jervis, SU-100 was already by the NJ Transit station waiting for a passenger train to clear. \u00a0Thankfully that happened, or we would have missed the train entirely. \u00a0We had enough time to set up a shot at the former Erie station just east of the existing NJT station.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.nanosphoto.com\/Railroads\/Blog-Posts\/2013-09-NJ--PA#2805742185_wLc4pM3-A-LB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" style=\"border: 1px solid black;\" title=\"\" alt=\" New York, Susquehanna &amp; Western train SU100 passes by the former Erie station at Port Jervis, NY. Taken just before midnight on September 15, 2013.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With that in the bag, we had time to get down to Warwick for the shot I really wanted. \u00a0But we won&#8217;t go into that shot &#8211; I screwed up the focus, so into the trash bin that one goes&#8230;life goes on. \u00a0But by the time SU-100 hit Warwick, it was already about 2am, and I still had a 90 minute drive ahead of me to get back to the hotel, so instead of continuing the chase, Mike and I called it a night and bid farewell.<\/p>\n<p>A couple days later I ventured out and met up with another friend and photographer &#8211; September 18th &#8211; something unique happened. \u00a0In preparation for a United Railway Historical Society event in Boonton, Norfolk Southern sent their Lackawanna heritage unit up the Washington Secondary. \u00a0It was brough up as far as the NJT yard at Dover, NJ, where it was tied down with a Lackawanna caboose. \u00a0So I headed up to get a few shots of it while it was sitting up in Dover &#8211;
