I had enough time to get up to Mill Cove and do my normal walk around the park before NR-2s arrival.

While walking around, one thing I noticed – still quite a bit of green on the trees. The colors are still slowly inching their way south, and have yet to really take hold in southeastern Connecticut. At least the recent wind & rain hasn’t stripped all the leaves off of the branches. Anyways, as I finished up my walk, I heard horns in the distance – NR-2 was sounding for the crossings at Dow Chemical to the north. So it was into the car for the quick trip to the south end of Mill Cove. Today I wanted to get the usual telephoto shots, in addition to some wide angle shots at the south end of the cove. A couple trees were beginning to turn colors, and I wanted to include them in the frame.

A minute later, NR-2 began sounding for the crossing at Red Top and came around the corner at MP4

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5122] [cpg_imagefixthumb:5121]

And a usual shot with the Harvard Boat House

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5120]

Then the foliage across the river caught my eye. Apparently the trees over there were changing faster than here on the eastern shore.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5119]

The the lens swap – took the telephoto off and strapped on the 18-50mm wide angle zoom. Got a pair of shots at the south end of the cove, the first a vertical of the lead power heading for the trees.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5118]

And the one I wanted – a wider shot of the trailing power and a couple trees

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5117]

From there it was off to the overlook south of the Thames River drawbridge. I got there a minute or so before NR-2 got to the signal (which was waiting for them with a green), so that gave me enough time to get into position. I opted for a slightly different framing – this time including some of the moored sailboats in the frame

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5116]

Then a shot of the trailing power passing the crane barge

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5115]

And as NR-2 rolled across the river to New London, I snapped a picture of a fishing vessel offloading their catch on the State Pier

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5114]

I figured I’d stay put and get a slightly different angle of NR-2 heading over Shaw’s Cove. I got a trio of shots at 200mm of the train crossing over the westernmost part of the bridge in New London.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:5113] [cpg_imagefixthumb:5112] [cpg_imagefixthumb:5111]

Satisfied with what I got in the beautiful morning sunlight, I packed up and headed back to the office for the remainder of the day. A day that was clearly too nice to spend inside…but alas I did…duty calls!

Thanks for looking!
Tom

Well, yesterday I did manage to get out in time to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 (unlike today – I missed them completely because I couldn’t get out in time – oh, well, ya gotta strike out from time to time…).
