After a couple day hiatus, I got back to my normal daily walk, and I figured a trip to Erickson Park in Ledyard would do the trick. So I left at my normal time, and arrived at the park as Providence & Worcester train NR-2 informed the Worcester dispatcher that they were south of MP12 in Norwich. Perfect – that gave me time to do my walk, and prepare a shot for the passing train.

So I grabbed my gear and started my walk around the park. A low drone of what sounded like a diesel engine kept rolling down the valley. As I was trying to identify the sound, the answer came downriver – a pair of tugboats and an empty coal barge (the same trio I caught here heading north loaded with coal) were making their way south in the channel of the Thames River. Of course, I snapped a few shots of them passing by.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3704] [cpg_imagefixthumb:3703] [cpg_imagefixthumb:3702] [cpg_imagefixthumb:3701]

Notice how much higher the empty barge is sitting in the water compared to the loaded one (see the link above for those pictures).

Not long after the tugs were out of view, NR-2 was reporting that they were south of MP5, putting them about a minute north of my position. I opted for the shot at the south end of Mill Cove, so I hopped in the car, and rode a bit south into position. Moments later, NR-2 rounded the bend and hit the causeway between the cove and the Thames River

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3700] [cpg_imagefixthumb:3699]

And the most interesting shot of the morning – A GE, a Dodge and a Mercury.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3698]

And finally, a kind of run-of-the-mill shot of NR-2s trailing power

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3697]

I would have tried for a Thames River drawbridge shot, but needed to hit the post office on the way back, so time was running short. Oh, well – next time!

Thanks for looking!
Tom

A foggy and somewhat humid morning, turned out to be decent photographically speaking.
