But as I walked around, I was thinking that I was tired of the same angles I’ve been shooting. So I was looking for something new.

I figured a series of shots from the north end of Mill Cove would give a bit of a different angle. So once I wrapped up my walk, I headed back to the car to get my camera and a couple lenses. Today I grabbed the venerable 70-200mm f/2.8, along with the 18-50mm f/2.8 to try a wide angle shot or two.

On my way back to the spot I had picked, the scanner crackled with Rod reporting that NR-2 was south of MP5. I ran the rest of the way to the spot, and got there just as the train was sounding for the Red Top crossing a few hundred yards to the north. I got the wide angle lens on just in time to get this shot of the train coming onto the causeway between Mill Cove and the Thames River.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3307]

After bagging that one, I switched back to the 70-200mm and got this going away shot of the lead power.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3306]

As the train rolled past, the long string of Tilcon hoppers bound for Midway caught my eye, so of course I took a shot.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3305]

And finally, 30 cars or so later, the trailing power with Rod riding along came across the causeway.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3304]

This next one I didn’t notice until I was later processing the images, but if you look to the right of the locomotive, you’ll see one of the US Navy patrol boats in the river that guards the Sub Base. They were there prior to the arrival of the train. I’d find out later on my trip back to work that a sub was inbound, so obviously they’d patrol a bit further north just in case.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3303]

And finally, I grabbed a longer telephoto shot of the trailing power and cars slipping into the trees at the south end of Mill Cove

[cpg_imagefixthumb:3302]

A brief walk back to the car, and it was back to the office for the rest of the day.

Thanks for looking!
Tom

Well, todays walk brought me to my regular spot – Erickson Park in Ledyard.
