the second time being an on the fly, but pretty successful run. And both times I was able to explore some new angles – the first one was more of a tweak, but the second was a completely new angle for me.

This morning, I had a bit of time to head out for a little walk and hopefully catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 somewhere. It was a bit later than normal, so I set my sights on Mill Cove for my stop. I got there ahead of the train, so I did my thing while waiting – of course listening to the scanner the whole time.

A little bit later, I caught NR-2 informing the Worcester dispatcher that they were south of MP9 and about 15 minutes from the base. OK, that put them about 10-12 minutes from me – perfect. Like I usually do, I got back in the car and headed for the south end of Mill Cove for my shots.

When I got down there, I decided to head a bit further south to see what things looked like through the brush. Well, one angle caught my eye – it was a bit limited, but looked pretty good. So I set up and waited.

A few moments later, NR-2 started blowing for the crossing at Red Top, and then came into view. As they proceeded along the causeway, I rattled off a few shots.

[cpg_imagefixthumb:10215] [cpg_imagefixthumb:10214] [cpg_imagefixthumb:10213]

Not too bad, especially for a mostly cloudy morning. With that in the bag, and the cloud cover being even thicker to the south, I decided to call it a morning and head back to the office.

For lunch today I headed over to New London to meet up with my boss, who was up here from New Jersey for a meeting in the New London Research HQ offices. After lunch, I figured that since I was literally next to Shaw’s Cove, I’d go and explore a bit.

Well after walking around a bit, I found an angle that I had been looking at for a while – I had seen other photographers (Mark Shenking comes to mind) shoot from here, and really wanted to check it out for myself. Well, I had found it – all I needed now was a train.

Just as I was saying to myself that I should pack it in and head back across the river, I glanced up to the north. Luckily I did look up because Amtrak train 173 was crossing over the Thames River lift bridge. Cool!

A little bit later, 173 was stopping at the New London Amtrak station, so a long telephoto was in order

[cpg_imagefixthumb:10212]

After exchanging passengers, they were on the move again, and a minute or so later, crossed over the Shaw’s Cove swing bridge, giving me the shots I was looking for

[cpg_imagefixthumb:10211] [cpg_imagefixthumb:10210]

Happy with what I got, I headed back to the car, and across the river for the remainder of the day. Not a bad little diversion on the way back to the office. I’ll be exploring this angle more in the coming days & weeks…stay tuned…

Thanks for looking!
Tom

As things worked out today, I was able to get out a couple times – the second time being an on the fly, but pretty successful run. And both times I was able to explore some new angles –
