Nanos<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/03\/20140717-420204365-_MG_8044-2.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3736\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/03\/20140717-420204365-_MG_8044-2-200x300.jpg?resize=200%2C300\" alt=\"Self Portrait at Essex, Conn.\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Photography is something that has been a passion of mine since Christmas in the mid-1980s when my parents gave me a basic darkroom kit as my gift.\u00a0 This, along with my father lending me his Minolta XE-5 SLR, sparked my interest in photography.\u00a0 In the decades since then, my dedication to the art had ebbed and flowed until late 2001 when I began photographing railroad operations.\u00a0 Mixing my passion for photography with my childhood love of railroads has proved to be the right formula to sustain my interest in the photographic arts.\u00a0 Over the years I have shot a variety of media \u2013 both black &amp; white and color, both print and slide, and in both 35mm and medium formats.\u00a0 Currently I primarily shoot digital, but do occasionally fall back to my roots and break out the Rolleiflex for some medium format black &amp; white.\u00a0 And, yes, I do process my own film when I shoot it.<\/p>\n<p>My main focus has been on documenting modern railroad operations, and have had most of my \u201csold\u201d work appear in published form \u2013 from magazines to books to calendars (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/awards-exhibits-publications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click here <\/a>for a comprehensive list) \u2013 around the world.\u00a0 Because I primarily shoot for a journalistic &amp; historical end, keeping my photos accurate and true to reality is one of my unbreakable rules.\u00a0 <strong><em>All of my photos are essentially as the camera saw it<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Nothing beyond the normal darkroom processes \u2013 such as burning, dodging, cropping, color and contrast adjustment, etc \u2013 has been altered.\u00a0 Everything from the motion blur of the tracks, to the heat rising from the locomotive exhaust, is real.\u00a0 No poles, wires, debris, or even people have been added or removed from any photo.\u00a0 <em><strong>To sum it up, nothing is Photoshopped in or out of the photos you&#8217;re viewing.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In addition to numerous\u00a0publications, my work has been featured in a number of art gallery exhibits, including most recently at the Oliver O. Jensen Gallery in Essex, Connecticut. \u00a0The Jensen Gallery hosted my first solo exhibit from May to October, 2014 titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nanosphoto.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/01\/a-dozen-miles-in-a-decade-art-gallery-exhibit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>A Dozen Miles in a Decade<\/strong><\/a>, featuring 39 large prints.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, I do venture out of my comfort zone of railroading and photograph other subjects from time to time.\u00a0 Those subjects can run the gamut from nature to portraits to still life, and those are reflected here on the blog from time to time.<\/p>\n<p>And if you&#8217;re curious, I&#8217;m a member of a few\u00a0organizations &#8211; both photographically and railroad related. \u00a0My current memberships are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.railphoto-art.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Center for Railroad Photography &amp; Art<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cteastrrmuseum.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Connecticut Eastern Chapter<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrhs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Railway Historical Society<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mysticvalleyrs.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mystic Valley Railway Society<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fecrs.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Florida East Coast Railway Society<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shootersgallerypg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shooters Gallery Photo Club<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Past Memberships include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/syeomans.homestead.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quiet Corner Camera Club<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.neccc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NECCC<\/a> Member Club &#8211; former President and Vice-President of the club)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I hope you enjoy what I have presented here on my website \u00a0To the left is a recent self-portrait I did in Essex, Connecticut on the Valley Railroad, highlighting some of my nighttime lighting gear in front of the railroad&#8217;s newest locomotive.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks for looking!<br \/>\nTom Nanos<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; The Photography of Thomas J.
