The day after the non-Storm of the Century on the 10th, we had a few inches of snow on the ground. But the sun was out, so I figured it would be worthwhile to head trackside for a few minutes and catch Providence & Worcester NR2 somewhere along the Thames River.
To an extent, it was worthwhile to head out – there was a nice blanket, albeit a think blanket, of snow on the ground,and the sun was out. The only problem is that I got out late, and was only able to catch NR-2 at one spot which is a little problematic with the shadows in the winter. But, hey, I’m not complaining at all…
So with my late start, and NR-2s early arrival, I figured my best bet would be the spot south of the USS Nautilus in Groton. So I parked the car, and made my way down the hill through the 3″ of snow on the ground and into position. Not long after getting there, the gates at the Nautilus dropped, and NR-2 came into view.

From there, I headed down to my spot south of the Thames River draw to see what NR2 would be doing. Listening to the scanner, it sounded like they were doing a little work in Fairview, so I decided to call it a morning and head back.
But just then, I noticed something that looked odd floating down the river – it looked like a grey buoy being swept away by the current. Out of curiosity, I grabbed the telephoto and snapped a shot of it just before it ducked back down under the water. It turned out to be a seal! And I’m not talking about the US Navy type of seal…
