P&W train NR-2 and a mom – 5/11/07

Another cloudy and foggy start to the day today. And again, the bulk of the fog stayed to the south of the Thames River, and didn’t come into play when I took my walk near Red Top in Ledyard, CT on the Providence & Worcester’s Norwich Branch. But I did stumble on something, that ended up being a sort of Mother’s Day message. Keep reading, you’ll see…

Today with the diffused lighting I decided to head for Red Top and try some different angles – ones that would be next to impossible if it was sunny out. I got to the cul-de-sac at Red Top about 10 minutes ahead of the train, so that gave me a chace to scout around, and get most of my regular walk in. Nothing was striking my eyes, so I decided to head in a new direction – towards the Thames, which required some careful rock walking.

When I got down to the river level, one thing did catch my eye – a mother swan sitting on her nest. Hmmm, that would make a pretty neat Mother’s Day tie-in. So I started exploring the angles, of course all the time keeping my distance from the nest – I didn’t want to encroach on the swan’s territory.

I picked one angle where I could not only get a shot of the train with the momma swan in it, but also could do some other shots of the train rolling along the Thames. Moments later, the horn started blowing for the crossing a few hundred yards behind me, and the train rumbled past. Today it was a quite long train – had to be at least 35 cars long. Anyways, here’s 4 shots, two with the mom, and two without.

Satisfied with what I got, I started heading back to the car. From the sounds of the scanner chatter, New England Central train 610 arrived across the river in Montville. But I didn’t have time to hang out for them – it sounded like they were going to be switching for some time before heading south to New London. Too bad too, because from what I hear, 610 will be moving to a nocturnal schedule starting on Monday. Oh, well – I’m glad I got shots of that job while I could.

Thanks for looking!
