P&W NR-2 & Summer’s Haze

Holy crap it was hot today. But that didn’t keep me from my walk. I headed for Erickson Park in Ledyard today – I figured with the haze in the air, I’d take advantage of it and include it in some telephoto shots of Providence & Worcester train NR-2 across Mill Cove.

As I was driving towards the park, NR-2 reported that they were south of MP12. That’ll give me enough time to get my walk in, and move into position at the south end of Mill Cove. Once I wrapped up the walk, I got in the car and started moving towards the south end – and at the same time, NR-2 was reporting to the dispatcher that they were south of MP5. Perfect timining!

Moments after I got into position, NR-2 came into view. Got a couple shots on the causeway at the north end of the cove.

As the train approached the inlet at the southernmost extent of the cove, I noticed something in the foreground – a family of Canada geese. Had to get ’em in the shot.

And by the time the trailing power rolled past, the subtle wake from the geese messed up the reflection of the train.

But the reflection mostly returned at the inlet

A quick jump back into the car and I was off to the south. By the time I caught up to the train at Fairview, they were requesting permission from the Amtrak Shore Line dispatcher to head west to the NECR. So I headed to the south of the drawbridge, again using the haze as a backdrop. Got a series of shots as the train traversed the bridge.

Since Shaw’s Cove was open, the train couldn’t go any further than the Governor Winthrop Blvd crossing in New London. So I decided to call it a day instead of waiting for the swing bridge to close and the train to head west again. Back in the car, and back to the office for the rest of the day…most of the time inside the comfortable air conditioning!

Thanks for looking!
