I had to leave work early today for a family emergency, so my return to catching Providence & Worcester train NR-2 will be very brief. Read on…
On my way out of work, the scanner was whizzing away, and when I was heading north on Route 12 in Ledyard, I caught NR-2 reporting to the Worcester dispatcher that they were south of MP12 and about 20 minutes from the sub base. Doing some quick math in my head, I figured I could probably get to Stoddard Hill before the train, and I had a few minutes to spare. So I made a quick stop and parked at the boat launch, where I grabbed my gear and hastily made my way to the tracks. I was hoping to get a shot from the south side of Stoddard Cove across the frozen water.
As I got to the tracks, I looked to the north and saw something – a trio of headlights making their way towards the Mohegan-Pequot Bridge. Damn – that only gave me a few minutes to get into position. So some fast walking/jogging was in order to get into position ahead of the train.
I got to my spot as the rumbling of NR-2 began to grow louder. Less than a minute later, NR-2 came into view, and I snapped off a series of shots. Two in particular made the cut, showing the train, and the icy water.

And as the train rolled out of sight, I headed back up for the tracks, and back to my car. Only a few minutes out of the car, so I was still on schedule. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon. Stay tuned!
Thanks for looking!
Tom
