NR-2 and a burned out building

The weather guys were talking about sunshine this morning, so I tried to get out for my walk & catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2. With the sunshine and blue skies I was aiming for Erickson Park and Mill Cove in Ledyard. Also, afterwards I wanted to swing by and get some photos of a building in Groton that burned down this morning. Well, most would go as planned.

I was able to head out a bit later than normal, and like usual, the scanner was whirring away. As I started my trek north, the P&W frequency came alive with the Worcester dispatcher answering NR-2. OK, it would be cool if that was the call that they were south of MP12 and 15 minutes from the sub base. That would give me just enough time to get up to the cove. A second later, something different came across the radio – “NR-2 is south of MP5 and OK to hold the main at Fairview.” Damn! At this point, I’d barely make it to the Nautilus, so instead I opted for Fairview.

I got there and looked around – nothing was really striking my eye. I’ve shot here many times before, and the angles are limited. So I started walking south along the tracks, and ended up at a path down to the river that the fishermen use. I liked the lines of the curving tracks before me as I looked north. So this is where I’d set up shop.

A few minutes later, NR-2 came into the yard limits, and stopped – it looked like they came in as light engines, and picked up a string of gondolas at the north end of the yard.

Once they put the cars between the pair of GEs, they headed south.

A moment later, this shot caught my eye with the water off to the right

And a classic “in your face” shot

A quick wave from Rod in the cab as they rolled past, and I was headed back to the car. That was it for the train stuff this morning.

On the way back to the office, I stopped on Thames Street where Ken’s Bait & Tackle shop burned down overnight. A sad sight indeed – it’s always disheartening to see someone’s hard work go up in flames, whether it’s their place of business or home. Here’s a few pictures of the aftermath.
