Halloween Part I – Trackside

Halloween this year was a gorgeous day.  Blue skies, calm, crisp air, and some fall foliage.  And luckily, I slept through my alarm, so I was late for work.  That ended up being quite fortunate.

Yep, I slept through my alarm on Halloween morning, so I was running a bit later than usual.  I finally got out of the house, and headed south.  Of course, the scanner was doing its thing, when soon after I left the house, NR-2 reported that they were southbound out of Plainfield.  Hmmm, that meant I should be able to catch them on my way into work, somewhere around Norwich, Preston or Ledyard, and not relaly make me much later.  So I set my sights on the Route 2A bridge, taking advantage of the nice weather, and turning leaves.

I crossed the bridge, and headed north on Route 12 a bit to park in the commuter lot and begin my hike out to the bridge.  While walking out, a car stopped next to me – it was a Connecticut State Trooper.  He was just asking where I was going, and after a quick conversation, he told me to stay safe, and continue on my way.

Also on my way out there, I heard NR-2 pull into Norwich and do a little switching.  Looks like the timing will work out!

While waiting, of course, I did my usual and shoot whatever else around me.  This morning there were some fishermen in the River, so I got a couple shots of them.

After about 10 minutes, NR-2 continued their trek southbound.  Soon after that, they came into view just to the north, and I got a couple shots of the train pulling out of the shadows.

Then a shot a bit wider

And finally the shot I wanted – one with the Mohegan Sun casino in the background

Satisfied with what I got, I began walking back to the car, figuring that would be it for shooting NR-2.

Well, I was wrong – despite the long walk back to the car, and the drive south on Route 12, I was able to catch NR-2 crossing the Thames on my way into the office.

Since I was still a bit late for work, I figured I didn’t have time to get shots of the train rolling through New London.  So I packed the gear away, and headed for the office.

Thanks for looking!
