Good Friday shipping in two forms – rail and sea

Today was another late start for me trying to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 heading into Groton. As I was driving north, the radio was somewhat silent – no aparent sign of NR-2 anywhere…until I turned onto Fairview Ave, and crossed over the bridge spanning the south end of Fairview Yard. One thing piqued my interest – the smell of diesel exhaust with no trucks around. First thought in my mind was DAMN!

Just as I passed the light and turned onto Military Highway, I heard the Amtrak Shore Line dispatcher give NR-2 permission through New London station. Yep, NR-2 was right under me as I passed over the bridge. So a quick turnaround in someone’s driveway was in order. I headed down to othe boat launch on the north side of the Thames River drawbridge, just in time to catch NR-2’s trailing power heading onto the bridge. So I grabbed this shot, which at least to me, works in B&W. I relly like the lines of the bridge trusses, along with the contrast between the highlights and the shadows. But that’s me…you may hate it. 😉

After that I decided despite the fairly heavy wind, for some across the river shots – mostly because I could never make it across the river to catch them in New London, or somewhere west of there. I got to my spot in the parking lot of the Waterfront Restaurant as the train was blowing for Governor Winthrop Blvd to the north of the station. Also of interest, the vessel Saga Horizon was moored to the State Pier in New London unloading lumber, so I grabbed a shot of it while I was waiting.

Now time to catch a few long tele shots of NR-2 across the water. I tried to incorporate some of the pilings and bouys in the Thames River into the shots to mix things up a bit.

Then one shot of NR-2s trailing power heading over the western approach to the Shaw’s Cove swing bridge

And the train moved out of sight. I figures while I was in the area, let’s get a couple broadside shots of the Saga Horizon. So I headed a bit north and snapped these two of the ship at the State Pier.

Then it was back to work for the rest of this Good Friday. Probably won’t have time to post anything over the weekend – Saturday I’ve got a private shoot in the morning, and the Windham Photo Club’s Gallery Exhibit reception is in the evening, and of course Sunday is Easter (this year the Orthodox Easter falls on the same day as the Catholic Easter, so we’ve got to hit both families in the same day).

Have a great weekend!
