Catchup #2 – 10/12/07 – P&W NR-2/3 at MP7 & Fairview

OK, the second installment for tonight. Yeah, I missed a day, but I haven’t had a chance to process the images from the 11th yet. Watch for those either later tonight, or tomorrow evening. And they’re nothing special – just NR-2 at Mill Cove, Fairview Yard and the Thames River under some cruddy weather. But this one has some blue sky in it! I was able to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2 and NR-3 at MP7 in Ledyard and just NR-2 at Fairview yard on the 12th.

The weather was breaking, so there were some peeks of blue sky behind the clouds. But with the mostly overcast sky, I opted for a spot on the west side of the tracks – closest to the Thames River and on the shadow side of the train. I also had my Rolleiflex TLR with me and took a couple shots on T-MAX film. Basically, NR-2 and NR-3 left Plainfield together, and would split apart at Dow Chemical, where NR-3 would remain, and NR-2 would continue south to Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and points west.

Not long after I got there, NR-2/3 was approaching, so I checked everything on the TLR to make sure all was set. A few minutes later, the train came into view, and I tripped the shutter on the Rollei at the spot I had previously picked out. Then I grabbed my 20D and snapped a shot of the train with the 18mm end of the wide angle zoom.

Then I got a shot with the TLR of the power at the middle of the train, and after the train cleared, I grabbed a couple shots of the combined jobs passing some fishermen just south of MP7

I then huffed it up the hill with my gear, collapsing my tripod on the way up. Because the train had to stop to drop NR-3 off at Dow, that gave me enough time to get ahead of them at Fairview. If I didn’t hit the one red light I did, I would have been able to catch ’em at the USS Nautilus, but alas, it wasn’t in the cards. So I got a couple pretty standard shots at the bottom of Fairview

And called it a day at that point. I was running short on time, and had a busy remainder of the day ahead of me, so I headed back for the office.

I’ve still got to develop the film – hopefully I’ll get to it tomorrow night after House.  We’ll see…stay tuned…

Thanks for looking!
