Cargo freighter, tugs, Amtrak and P&W NR-2

Another very nice day today – a touch more humidity in the air, but still a pretty darned nice morning. I figured I’d head out at the normal time and head for Erickson Park in Ledyard for my walk. Well, that wouldn’t be in the cards today – it seems that NR-2 has been getting out of Plainfield early this week. That’s OK, the change of plans yielded some different shots.

As I was driving north today, I barely made it onto Thames St. when P&W train NR-2 reported that they were south of MP5. Well, that meant that not only Erickson Park, but also the Nautilus was out of reach this morning. The only option was to set up along the Thames River and get a shot of the train crossing the Thames River drawbridge.

As I pulled into the parking lot, I couldn’t help but notice a bulk freighter being eased into the State Pier by a pair of tugboats. Not a bad start to the morning. And I got there well in advance of NR-2’s arrival. The bulker was the Liberian flagged vessel Scoter, and the tugs were the Patricia Ann and the Thameship.

During all this, an Amtrak regional headed out of New London Station

Just then a Sea-Tow boat came speeding down the river, so of course I got a series of shots of it passing by the action at the pier

By then, the two tugs were pulling away from the ship.

Once the Amtrak clears Groton Interlocking, the dispatcher gave NR-2 the signal to head west to New London, where they’d be heading to the New England Central.

Not too bad. Now with the tugs gone, the freighter moored, and NR-2 heading for the NECR yard, I figured it was time to head back to the office for the rest of the day.

Thanks for looking!
