What I’d do for my photography. On Tuesday I had a small hole in the schedule, so I decided to head out for a nice, nearly mile-long hike along the Thames River to catch Providence & Worcester train NR-2. That was all fine and good, but I neglected to remember that we were coming off of a night that had temperatures dipping down into the low twenties, and a morning with a stiff northerly wind. But undaunted by the elements – or apparent lack of preparation in my clothing choices – I made my hike and got my photos. And, yes, I’m trying to get back into the swing of regular postings. Hopefully the dry-spell is over and you’ll see stuff here on a more regular basis. Well, at least less than sporadic…heh…
Yep, despite the frosty evening we had Monday night, I only wore the shell to my jacket, and didn’t have my gloves nor a hat with me when I departed the parking area at Stoddard Cove for my half mile hike north to Poquetanuck Cove, on the Preston/Ledyard town line. Of course, the trip north was into the wind, and along the river, so there was no shelter from the constant breeze. Needless to say, I was quite chilled by the time I walked the distance between the coves, and found a little shelter from the wind in the rock cut along the tracks. After regaining the feeling in my ears and fingers, I surveyed the scene and picked where I wanted to shoot – about halfway up the rock cut. But looking around I noticed some stray vegetation that was in my way. So out came the saw on my Leatherman, and I did a little landscaping before the train got there. A few minutes after I was done, I heard NR-2 to the north hitting the horn at a crossing. So into position I went. Not long after that, they came into view to the north in Preston, and I got a nice series of photos of them rolling south out of Preston and into Ledyard.
[AFG_gallery id=’10’]After that, it was a nice walk back to the car, and back to the office for the rest of the day. At least the return trip was with the wind at my back, making things a bit more tolerable. It also helped that I got the shots I was looking for.
