Down here in NJ again this week, and after I got out of the office yesterday, I headed down to Bound Brook station for a little shooting. I figured it would be a nice and easy evening of shooting and enjoying the passing trains. I really didn’t feel like driving anywhere, so the spot that’s 2 minutes from my hotel won out. Plus if for some reason freights weren’t around, I’d at least get some NJ Transit shots. Well, as things turned out, there were freights-a-plenty running through Bound Brook, including Conrail, Norfolk Southern and CSX, in addition to the usual suspects on New Jersey Transit.
Once I wrapped up my day at the office, I figured that since I had been up since 4am, I would take it easy and go for the low hanging fruit around here, and head to Bound Brook station for the evening. The sun was nice, and I thought I could get not only some nicely lit westbounds, but also some backlit eastbounds as well as some glint type shots. The only question was whether or not there would be any freights around – the NJT runs were givens.
Well within the 90 or so minutes I spent at Bound Brook, I caught eight freights, including a couple manifest, an autorack, couple stacks and an empty ethanol train, in addition to a bunch of NJ Transit runs (most of which I didn’t shoot). OK, enough typing, here’s the photos.

Tom, I am a resident of Bound Brook and also a member of the BB Economic Development Advisory Committee. I stumbled onto your blog through a Google search on Bound Brook, and was intrigued with this hobby of trainspotting. Had no idea it was a popular activity, or that Bound Brook was a favored location. How many people would you say visit Bound Brook for this purpose? Your photos are wonderful! What drives your interest?

Kerry-
First off, thanks for visiting and thanks for the kind words on my photos! Glad you stumbled onto the blog…
In the handful of times I’ve photographed from the BB station, I’d say there were 2 or 3 other railfans there either photographing, or just watching the action most times. I can only think of one or two times when I was the only one there (other than the passing NJT passengers).
What drives my interest? I guess a childhood love of trains, merged with a passion for photography (I’ve been involved in photography since the mid 80’s), and throwing in documenting today’s railroad operations for future generations. You can read more if you click the About Me link above, or just click here. Well, and it’s also something my wife lets me, and encourages me to do. 🙂
Thanks!
Tom
