July 26th NR-2 – EMDs in the lead

The next installment of the backlog clearing is from the 26th of July, when I caught a pretty good sized Providence & Worcester train NR-2 at a couple spots along the Thames River.  The only remarkable thing about this train – despite the length – is that the lead power was a pair of EMD GP38s – something unusual for the P&W in this area of the system, where the GEs are usually the power of choice.

This time around, I started my shooting near milepost 7 in Ledyard, CT, where I caught the longer NR-2 running along the Thames in Preston, then into Ledyard.  Once they got closer to me, I also worked a fisherman into the frame as the train approached MP7.  From there, it was off to Goss Cove and the USS Nautilus overlook park for a quick shot there – where a seagull also made a timely landing in the cove.  After that it was off to Fairview Yard a mile or so to the south where NR-2 set out one lumber car, then continued with the rest of the train – primarily gondolas of steel billets and loads of stone from Rawson Materials – down to the signals at Amtrak’s Groton wye, where they’d proceed west.  But Fairview was the last stop for me – the meeting schedule picked up soon after I bagged the train there, so it was back to the office for me.
