Late morning at NAN

Back on May 10th, the weather was pretty good – some sun mixed with clouds – so I was considering going out and shooting a bit.  But with some early morning meetings, I thought I couldn’t make it.  Then I got a message that Amtrak had parked a pair of GP38s on the Ring’s End spur in Niantic.  OK, that’s pretty unique for the area, so I figured I’d take advantage of a small hole in my schedule mid-morning.  Not only was I able to get the power, I also bagged Providence & Worcester NR-2, and an Amtrak Acela and Regional.

With the opening in my calendar, and the call from Vinny, I made my way down to Niantic for a bit.  At the very least I’d get the Amtrak work train power sitting shut down on the Ring’s End siding.  After shooting the pair of GP38H-3s, we made our way down to the boardwalk area and McCook Point park.  While there, Amtrak 171 and 2150 came rolling by.  We did hear NR-2 going through New London station, but I was running out of time, so I headed out.  But as I pulled down Main Street towards the light at the old Mobil station, I heard a “hot rail” call for NR-2.  So I stopped off at the convenience store, propped myself up on a rock, and got a few shots of NR-2 passing by – despite being only a trio of light engines.  Oh, well…still came out pretty good IMHO.
